Mary Ellen Cunningham Elementary School

Principal's Message

Stacy Foss, the principal at Cunningham Elementary, is an experienced and passionate educational leader who is committed to improving educational systems as a way to bridge equity gaps, create inclusive spaces, and attain positive outcomes for all children. She believes in the transformative power of reading and writing to change lives, help us understand our experiences as humans, heal, imagine our futures, and build community. Prior to joining being the principal at Cunningham, Stacy spent two decades working in schools as a teacher, campus administrator, district-level leader, and at a local non-profit.

Stacy’s teaching journey began as a special education teacher in Eanes ISD. She then joined Austin ISD as an Assistant Principal at Barton Hills Elementary and Maplewood Elementary and then served as the Principal of Pease Elementary. As a principal, she led community engagement, increased school climate and culture exponentially, and partnered with stakeholders for growth in student achievement. Most recently, Stacy had the privilege of serving as Senior Academic Coordinator at Literacy First, a nonprofit at the University of Texas.  Stacy excels in relationship-driven strategic planning and coaching as she prioritizes listening, reimagining, and setting ambitious but attainable goals.

In addition to these experiences, Stacy has also worked as an adjunct professor at Huston-Tillotson University, helping codify and share best instructional practices in literacy with pre-service teachers. Her extensive knowledge in teaching and learning has positioned her to design curriculum for several undergraduate literacy courses. Stacy has deep expertise in literacy, pedagogical approaches that promote critical thinking, individualized instruction for learning differences, and helping teachers develop the confidence and skills they need to excel in the classroom.

Stacy earned a B.S. from Texas State University with a major in Interdisciplinary Studies and a minor in Special Education. She earned a Master's in Education specializing in Literacy and a Doctorate in Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment specializing in integrating the arts into core curriculum.   When not working, Stacy enjoys hanging out with her family, listening to music, reading, and going on long walks.
